What you think mate?

John | Especially drink I think - went to a pub near Chewton Mendip on St. Georges day and found myself surrounded by Calocybe gambosa in the pub garden !
And I'd only had a sip since I was driving, so wasn't seeing things
Nick

John | This has the look of a Clitocybe or a Melanoleuca - this may sound odd but it struck me that it was atypical Clitocybe geotropa at first sight, possibly atypical material that hasn't expanded properly BUT ......
I'm not hugely convinced by my argument !
If a Melanoleuca then possibly what was known as Melanoleuca evenosa, now properly called M. strictipes ! When were these photographed ? I ask, since Clitocybe geotropa is (as you know) autumnal, in woodland but Melanoleuca strictipes is vernal, in scrub or in grassland (which this appears to be growing in !)

Nick | Hi Nick
These were found on the 3rd of November last year growing in soil on grassland. Beech trees were in the near vicinity. It was a group of about 10 fruit bodies, but all shared the same pronounced cap.
No particular smell other than the grass it was growing in! If that makes any sense

John | I seriously wonder whether this is an 'abnormal mycelium' of Clitocybe geotropa then, John - sometimes things go awry with the nuclei in the mycelium and it then produces either nothing or abberant basidiomes.
But as I always end up saying, microscopy is the only way to identify things with any degree of certainty (but realise that not all collections are kept).
Can't be any more help than that with this one !

Please? |

Nick | Never mind Nick The next time I see any more like this I'll throw them over the shoulder Many thanks again.
