Unknown from Longshaw

I found this at Longshaw a few years ago. I was more interested in something else at the time and just took a quick shot from a distance and didn't really go close enough to view it properly Each time I view it I get the feeling it may be something a little special maybe It was growing out a bank of earth. I'm sorry the picture is so poor!

Can someone put me out of my misery one way or the other please

Thanks - John

Are you sure that is a fungus and not a plant?

Looks very plant-like to me as well - can't think of anything fungal that it could be !

I am so pleased it’s considered to be a plant What a relief ... but what?

Good Morning John

I think this might be: Cladonia floerkeana

I'm not too good with fungi, but I have found a picture in my Mushroom reference book, that shows similarities to your picture. Apparently this particular mushroom is common on peaty or sandy soil, or on rotting wood and often developes branched rods....
I hope this information is of use to you.

Kind regards, Maria

Good morning Maria

It could well be a Lichen (lichens have a symbiotic association for the mutual benefit of algae and fungi) as you suggest.

Many thanks

John

Re: Unknown from Longshaw

Hi John,
Frustratingly, every time I click your picture 'You do not have permission......' pops up. It is very annoying as I cannot read anywhere how I get round this.

Anyway, if it is a lichen, and yes, most likely a Cladonia sp, then going through my huge book on Lichens of North America there are at least 10 sp of Cladonia with red 'tips' to choose from - C.cristatella and C.floerkeana seemingly the most likely candidates.

As to their occurrence in Britain, I have no idea without delving deeper, but not being able to enlarge your picture I can only assume others are correct in suggesting this is a lichen.

Neil.

Hi Neil thanks for your help.

If you refresh the web page can you still not see the image? Let me know.

John

Re: Unknown from Longshaw

Hi John,

I clicked the reload/refresh button, it did not work first time but I seem to have cracked it now, so now that I can enlarge your photo I can clearly see it ain't no lichen (mind, I did'nt really think it was in the first place)

Yes, as Nick says, it's definately a plant, but I don't think it is diseased, as doing quite a bit of gardening work, I often come accross young seedlings with their early (cotyledon ?) leaves a bright red which make them stand out sufficiently to make me bend down for a closer look whilst mowing the lawn/weeding whatever.

Hope that's of help, Neil.

Thats a fair point Neil - and the more I look at the picture, probably the right point as well !
