Hi !
This is a 'cup fungus' (ascomycete) in the genus Peziza - but without microscopic details that is as far as you will get - would be interesting to know what it is growing on (looks like wood ?) but even then one is on dodgy ground without the microscopic examination !

Originally Posted by serendipity It was growing on the burnt stump of what i think may have been ash! | Interesting ! - in that case it probably can be identified - the 'scurfy' outside of the cups and the habitat on burnt substrate would tend to suggest that it is probably Peziza echinospora which is a common burnt ground (or wood) taxon.
But as I said previously, that is only a tentative diagnosis since without the microscopy to look at the spores (which are the diagnostic feature) one can never be totally sure !
