| | | Two more coprinus !
Absolute mass of these at the base of an uprooted Betula (birch). probably not coprinus anymore.

This one, all alone on a pile of woodchip.

| | | Re: Two more coprinus ! I'll stick with the well known name Coprinus john
I would suggest Coprinus micaceus for the first image and Coprinus comatus for the second image.

| | | Re: Two more coprinus ! The first one is probably Coprinus micaceus, and the second one is probably Coprinopsis lagopus, which is commonplace on wood chips, and also in woods. The cap beneath the fluff should be brownish at the top. Coprinopsis jonesii occurs on fire sites, and has a grey cap beneath the white fluff. There are a few alternatives though.

HI JP - I think that the first of your images (on the uprooted birch) is going to be Coprinellus micaceus (= Coprinus micaceus) by the look of it - it's not showing the veil very much but that gets washed off very easily and it's quite frequent at this time of year !
HOWEVER, one also has to be aware that there is also 'something' that is the almost identical mimic of Coprinellus micaceus and is also not infrequent in the spring - in all aspects it is C. micaeus BUT the fruitbodies arise from a rusty-brown coloured Oozonium stage - I couldn't see this at the bases of the stipes in your photo but it doesn't mean that it's not there !
The latter species has not yet been described so it has no name - but worth keeping ones eye open for at this time of year though !
The other image (fungus on the woodchips) is surely very young Coprinopsis lagopus (=Coprinus lagopus)

Nick | That's not fair - the BC hasn't been updated with regard to this species
