| | | Re: Nordic Macromycetes, Volume 2 It arrived this morning WOW. All 2.2 kg of it so a handy field guide it is not
It now covers 2675 species in over 960 pages. It is made up of a 23 page Key to the genera followed by keys to all the species and within those keys are the descriptions of each. No photos in the book only diagrams of the spores and cystidia when felt appropriate. The photos are provided on the included MycoKey program.
Having had a copy of a couple of keys for a while now (Mycena and Lactarius) the rest of the book takes on a similar form.
Although I have found one or two minor problems already I can guarantee it will be on the wish list of every serious fungi hunter even at the exchange rate inflated price of c£82 plus p+p
I will come back with a more detailed description/review soon.

Mal | Thanks. And I guess buy quickly before the pound sinks even further against the euro ...

| | | Re: Nordic Macromycetes, Volume 2 I've got my copy of Funga Nordica now ... very useful book indeed
However I do notice that Mycokey that comes with it seems to have all the keys, (which seems to be the whole of the book) on there. So it would appear that if you buy Mycokey, which is cheaper at 49 euro + VAT you are getting the information in a slightly cheaper way, though you don't have a book to show for it. And I'm using the digital keys on the computer rather than the book as it is easier, means I don't damage the book's spine or mine to access the information.
Now I'm hoping to find a (very) bargain Ellis and Ellis ... they are a whopping £150 new, which makes Funga Nordica look very good value, and Mycokey a real bargain indeed.

| | | Re: Nordic Macromycetes, Volume 2 Glad i bought my Ellis+Ellis containing dung fungi some time ago, it wasn't
cheap then, but i noticed it seemed to take a sudden (£20) leap last year,
hardly going to encourage any budding mycologists.

I am not sure but I think the copy of MycoKey included has been "upgraded" to include the keys. I don't think the copy you get with a normal purchase has them on the disc.

Mal | That was what I wasn't quite sure about, and it wasn't clear from the Mycokey website. I do know someone who purchased Mycokey just before Christmas, not sure which version he has got, but will try to find out if they are on his. If it hasn't, then getting Funga Nordica which includes Mycokey is a bargain ... you get a huge amount more info for not a lot more ...

Melanie | The version we have with the book is 3.1 ... size 557Mb (PC) where version 3.0 to download / buy is only 540 Mb .. Not much difference but probably enough for Keys when extracted.
Still a very useful book to have!
John
PS 570 Mb downloaded from their parent site (version 3.1) ... Interesting Index of /Mycokey/downloads

Melanie | The Natural History Book Service (Google NHBS) has the plant volume of Ellis and Ellis at £60 and the miscellaneous substrates at £34-99.
