Maybe the first Laetiporus sulphureus of the year, gess it will be a nice size by next weekend, growing on a fallen cherry tree.

Cheers J.P. | Now that is quite interesting - I've always noticed that Laetiporus comes out on Prunus avium early in the year, on Taxus (Yew) in the summer and then everything else later on in the year.
Hmmmmm.................

| | | Re: Possible first well that's a fungi fact i didn't know, i've never found one so early or on prunus, (mind you havn't seen one on taxus, not to many around here).
I'm not into eating fungi, but does anyone know if substrate affects taste/smell.

| | | Re: Possible first With this one it certainly it affects edibility I believe it picks up toxins from some of its hosts. No doubt someone will give us the full details

Mal | Yes, true Mal - good point to make ! NEVER eat Laetiporus if it's growing on either Taxus baccata (Yew) since it could do exactly that and the other 'classic' is never to eat it if found on Eucalyptus sp. (as it is in Australia, and could be here in Britain, albeit rarely I would think !)
Having said that I think that the 'never eat Laetiporus' would be sufficient since it has been known to cause poisonings when collected from innocuous hosts such as beech since it is full of 'serotonin-like' and 'tyramine' chemicals when aged !

| | | Re: Possible first I found a very early Laetiporus sulphureus last year on a fallen tree in Hawley woods. I can't remember what tree it was, I'll have to go back and have a look.
PS
I've yet to be poisoned by this fungi, I've still got a portion of C of the W curry in the freezer from the Autumn |
