WAB Clumber Fungi Foray 2008

Just a quick note to let everyone know that our first day was excellent!

The weather kept dry all day and the number and quality of species found was .... well, typical of Clumber on a good day

I guess the images will start to flood in after the weekend ... and they will be many!!

Time now for a long soak, a glass or two of wine and prepare for tomorrow.

We spent the morning at Clumber Park with our fellow WABers on the fungi foray (unfortunately couldn't stay all day ) but what an excellent morning as it didn't rain and it was great to meet some of the fungi crew at last

I'm sure the more knowledgable will be posting plenty of fungi shots after the weekend (I have got 2 or 3 shots but as usual I have forgotten what they are even though Fungi John gid tell me what one is )

Anyway I'll start with one I do know Hen of the woods



Now while this isn't a fungi it was an interesting find (especially as it is a slug )



Anyway here are the 3 I don't know/have forgotten the names of which I'm sure the rest will ID for me







I'm sure this will be only a taster of what's to come from those who know far more about fungi than me.

Hi Dave,

I'm not so sure if that is Hen of the woods, looks more like Meripilus giganteus to me.
No 2. With the slug, is a Gymnopilus sp. - difficult to work out size, but probably penetrans.
No 3. Pluteus cervius maybe.
No 4&5 Pass.

I wouldn't worry too much about no 5 as I'm sure FungiJohn told me what it was but being a numpty I've completely forgotten

You are correct Neil,

The Grifola frondosa Hen of the woods was on the other side of the oak!

The Gymnopilus was ~10 across - Gymnopilus junonius was mentioned on size but I am not sure - I would have expected some scales, perhaps they get washed off??

Home safe Very tired, in pain but very happy What a couple of days - first class and thats just the wabbers never mind the fungi

Anyway this is just to say we've survived the M1/M62 and are now waiting for the hot pot (one i prepared early!!) to warm through............

A big thank you to the boss - Fungi John for prepping and leading and showing Clumber to us with all the enthusiasm of a 7 year old - long may you be that way John - you are nothing short of a delight

Thanks also to Les and Jenny Wrenny for hanging back and waiting to guide us in when we were a bit late on the first day ..............

And thanks to everyone else for the excellent company and knowledge of all sorts of stuff other than fungi.

And thats the oven buzzing - tea is served and when I've eaten that I shall probably pass out in the chair till bedtime!!

I made it home safe and sound about half an hour ago (minor hold up on the M11) and am still unpacking.

What an absolute corker of a weekend! A fantastic variety of fungi (FJ reckoned we topped 150 species and I'm sure he's right) and superb company as well.

Just to echo what Pauline said - a huge thank-you to Fungi John for all the planning and organising and for cheerfully putting up with my constant repetition of "what's this?" The only time he got any peace was when I was pestering Nick, Pauline or Vicky with the same question. Thanks also to Les (nettle-runner) and Vicky for helping to guide the stragglers (me!) and make sure I didn't get lost.

Many thanks too, to Nick for organising our accommodation and for going through my first day's shots with me, helping to put names to most of them.

Just a quick reminder that the competition in the October issue of Outdoor Photography is "Focus on Fungi" with a closing date of 31st October. If we didn't manage to get a winning shot between us we need slapping!

Well, what can I say … Good weather, good fungi and excellent company during a first true WAB foray at Clumber Park.

Thanks for all your kind comments, but I have to say it was your foray and all of you made it a very special event. To meet wabbers Pauline, Ian, Richard, Jerry, Neil, Dave and our young ever enthusiastic Nick was a real delight.

So too, faithful foray companions Vicky, Dave, the 'rare' Jenny and of course the Master of the dark forest Les, who with his dogs Jess and Patch have been excellent company on many occasions.

I must also thank Vicky, a very good friend and knowledgeable expert in so many wildlife areas. She has helped me on so many occasions and even though she does buy fungi books with no pictures in them ... I can't fault her at all!

And finally Annette my long suffering wife, best friend and taxi driver! She has had to put up with my obsession with photographing fungi almost full time! I do hope she liked the new Dyson I bought for her birthday .... She did ask for one btw

So, if anyone wishes to do the same next autumn ... We need to book the base camp quite soon!

I'd too like to add my thanks to everyone for their companionship.

FungiJohn was a fount of enthusiasm and knowledge throughout two long days. Not only was there plenty of time for photography, but the locations seemed to have been chosen to provide opportunities for everyone (wait for those pictures of Parasitic Boletes ).

Vicky, Pauline, Nick and Richard all tolerated lots of naive questions. Next year I'm determined I'll be able to say "looks like a Hebeloma" with the same conviction as these guys.

I'll post a list of galls found over in the Insect forum later today.

Wow, looks like you all had a fantastic weekend, sounds like it was very well organised too. I can understand that you are all exhausted but look forward to seeing/hearing about it when you've all had a chance to recharge your batteries.

yes, great weekend Thanks to John for showing us some cracking species ( many of which were on member's hitlists) and everyone else for the company.
This was my first WAB meet and it's a strange feeling meeting people who you've never seen before but arn't "strangers" if you see what I meen.
I hope every one got home Ok and arn't too tired.I managed to keep one eye open for most of sunday night

So, here's to the next one I can make,

Well it sounds like the must do holiday next year,
I notice the last weekend of september next year is 26/27.
the first weekend of October are 3/4.
If a base camp is available i think a few firm bookings will
soon arrive if FJ sets either weekend.
