Fungi Events 2008

Hello all

Whilst we have an 'events' area on WAB I thought it might be also useful to have a fungi foray / event sticky thread that would be easy for all to access quickly.

If you have any planned forays, workshops or other fungi related activities going off in your local area you can post them here.

I'll start the ball rolling with events planned for Clumber Park.

Can we restrict its use to events only please just to make it easily accessible. Thanks all and lets hope this year is a good one

John

Re: Fungi Events 2008

Suffolk Fungus Group

Here's the foray programme for 2008. We have several new sites this year and are very fortunate that Alec Bull has offered to lead two forays in the north of Suffolk. These two will be on Saturdays but all other forays will be on Sundays, starting at 2pm - unless shown otherwise below.

27 July
Staverton Park, near Rendlesham - the great Oak Polypore hunt. Meet just past the wood on the left verge (if heading for the Oyster pub) at TM365506. If no room, park at the pub junction TM368510. Places limited to 10 people due to the sensitivity of this private wood. NO DOGS AND NO COLLECTING BASKETS on this occasion. Please phone the leader, Neil Mahler, 01728 831626 to book in advance.

14 September
Pound Farm, Sweffling Woodland Trust Reserve - 1st known fungus survey at this site. Leader: Neil Mahler. Meet at the car park - TM327637. The wood was planted about 17 years ago with locally native species, so it is important to do a fungi survey to be used as a comparison for future surveys. N.B. IT CAN BE MUDDY !!

27 September
(Saturday 2pm) Thornham Hall, leader: Alec Bull, former member of the Norfolk Fungus Study Group. An experienced botanist, Alec co-authored the book "A Flora of Norfolk" and is currently recording north Suffolk's plants for the soon-to-be-published "Flora of Suffolk". Meet at Thornham Hall car park - TM104719.

11 October
(Saturday 2pm) Thelnetham, leader: Alec Bull. Meet at the church NGR: TM017783. We will be recording in the area of Hinderclay and Thelnetham Fens near the source of the Little Ouse River. May be damp in places.

12 October
10.30am START Joint foray with the Lowestoft Field Club at Reydon Wood Suffolk Wildlife Trust Reserve, near Southwold - TM480787 (on bend). Neil has been invited to lead the LFC foray at this well studied ancient woodland, so let's find something new!

19 October
Newbourne Springs Suffolk Wildlife Trust Reserve, leader: Neil Mahler. Meet at car park TM274433. This compact, but very interesting reserve used to supply the drinking water for Felixstowe until the nitrate levels became too high. Water permeates through the red crag until it reaches the impermeable clay below and emerges as springs feeding the stream which has gouged out the valley we see today.

26 October
Orford road near Eyke - TM323506 - has large populations of boletes and the scarce Amanita gemmata may be found here. Leader: Ian Richards

9 November
Near Butley - TM368485 - mainly pine so Gymnopilus etc. Leader: Ian Richards.

Please keep an eye on this web site for any updates.

foray programme 2008

Unless otherwise stated forays to begin at 2.00pm and last for 2 – 2½ hours.

Re: Fungi Events 2008

Quick postscript to the message re. Shrooms microscopy workshop. Sadly we have to limit numbers on this kind of exercise and 17th May is a workshop for the benefit of Shrooms ABFG members (ticket ony!) So it's advisable not to turn up to Alice Holt in the hopes.

My apologies to Michael Jordan and anyone else concerned for not making that clear.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone in the 'Shrooms area of NE Hampshire and its Surrey and Berkshire borders to contact WAB's Julie (singingjulie) if you are interested in joining a flourishing, dynamic fungi group.

This should be a very interesting foray / location! Ideal for rare species, especially Amanita's.

I may pop over sometime to have a quick look.

Re: Fungi Events 2008

Hi
I decided to take up mushrooming so I can eat lots of nice mushrooms
As a child we used to go mushroom picking but i always had somebody more experienced with me.
I heard about the mushroom forays, but can not find any near me.
Could somebody let me know where should i look for one?
And also can you pick some or are they only visual?
I live near WOKING,surrey.
thanks

Re: Fungi Events 2008

Do you do any beginners workshops as well, or would any of the events be suitable for a beginner who is in the very early stages of learning?

Alternatively do you know of any workshops near Peterborough?

Trying to get started. Thanks.

Re: Fungi Events 2008

I run a social and adventure club in the Manchester area (Cheshire, Lancs etc)
We put all sorts of events on for our members - can anyone recommend how we could get a guided 'fungi' walk or similar?

Our members do pay for events so charging within reason is okay - also being totally ignorant on these things (apologies to all you experts out there) I take it there are preferred times of the year for these events and that I may now be looking at 2009?

Thanks
