| | | Re: mushrooms Hi welcome to the site, there are some fantastic fungi enthusiasts on here, so im sure you will get a great answer. Im afraid the best advice i can give you is Autumn is the best time of year and woodland the best habitat. Although thats a very simplistic rule. May depend on what species your after? do you want to eat them? |

| | | Re: mushrooms Good evening Derek,
First off, a warm welcome to WAB; you've come to the right place to find out what you might like to know. Secondly, as Dogghound says, what do you want to know? Mushrooms and fungi grow in many habitats at different times of the year. Some fruit all year, some only fruit for a few days. Some are worth thousands of pounds in the right quantities, some are worth shirt buttons! Of course, some are delicious and treated as delicacy, but some will have you in the morgue in a week. You've got the culinary factor- a risky business for beginners and amateurs alike; the latter of course presented with reduced risk due to experience. If it's culinary picking advice you're after, then may I suggest a good book. The book I use for that is presented by The Tasty Mushroom Partnership- Mr. Peter Jordan and his wife Valerie and the book I have in mind is linked below. The Tasty Mushroom Partnership - Edible Mushroom Field Guide
As I say, you'll probably need to articulate the factors of mushrooms that you wish to take interest in, because as obscure as the topic may seem upon first impressions, once you meet our pal Fungus Ken, you'll see otherwise
Anyway, for anyone, I'd recommend Roger Phillips' book 'Mushrooms' which holds enough information for a beginner and enthusiast. You can have a look at this great book here; Roger Phillips - Mushrooms
Alternatively or even additionally* you can have a look at Michael Jordan's great book, which I must think about buying. You can check that out here; Michael Jordan - Encyclopedia of Fungi
*Note that although these are both excellent books for the beginner and the amateur enthusiast, they are renowned for having material in that tends to contradict the others' words- but that seems quite common in the world of mycology.
Hope that's enough to go on to start with!

| | | Re: mushrooms I know no specific locations in the area, and I'm sure if anyone did, they'd not tell However, if you're to have any chance, this thread is well worth a read as for habitat, time of year and the like... Have a look First Common Morel - Dorset
Hope it helps a little,

I seem to spend all my time telling people it's not as simple as some of the popular field guides would imply.
