| | | Scarlet elf cup habitat Scarlet elf cup was found again today. Is it unusual to be out in Yorkshire at this time of year? Also it was growing on fallen branches albeit moss covered?

Although it is not common this is the time of year it is found and it has been recorded most often towards the coast in Yorkshire. I am not sure that is because it prefers that habitat or because the mycologists who are interested in the smaller fungi live towards the coast. It is found on twigs/logs which are often covered in moss.

| | | Re: Scarlet elf cup habitat Rotting hazel branches seem to be the favourite in my experience or perhaps it's because I'm not near the coast, just spent a higher percentage of my time in a certain broadwood habitat with hazel as an understory species. |

| | | Re: Scarlet elf cup habitat David: Would you believe it. This morning I took almost exactly the same photo: same specimens, same angle and composition. (I took advantage of your tip off.) Check out my Gallery (once the image is approved).
Regarding the original post, I have seen this species twice, and on both occasions it was on mossy branches. My suspicion is that it favours wetter areas, where moss is likely to be present, as it is not a required association. |
