| | | Re: Yellow gill fungi... Even with the experience of having had one of these pointed out to me on a Minley Wood foray with 'Shrooms, it is still a hard one to pin down from the reference books I've got, and the resemblance of the two in comparison is somewhat remote especially with respect to cap colour.

| | | Re: Yellow gill fungi... Yes, I was puzzled in early November by a very strange Russula we found on a foray with very yellow gills.
It was only when I got back home and took it out of its pot that I realised it really looked nothing like a Russula and it was in fact Hygrophorus hypothejus. But I identified it from memory, having found it before, rather than from any books. When I compared it with the photos in the Fungi Europaei monograph which covers Hygrophorus, I suddenly had second thoughts because it just didn't look right. But some microscopy confirmed it couldn't be anything else.
The appearance of the cap is obviously very variable. At least that was my excuse when I had to email everyone on the foray to say that the mystery, and potentially very interesting, Russula was nothing of the sort. OOps.

| | | Re: Yellow gill fungi... I never really noticed how variable the cap is. The bright yellow gills, if you are lucky the bright orange/pink band around the top of the stipe and the time of year has usually made identifying this fungus straightforward.
