| | | Re: Number 1 Fungi Book If you just want 1 fungi book I would recommend the original 'Mushrooms and other fungi of Great Britain & Europe' by Roger Phillips.
If you can't get this then buy 'The Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe' by Michael Jordon.
If you win the lottery, consider the 6 'Fungi of Switzerland' volumes. A very useful collection with about 85% of the species you are likely to find in the UK. Mine are never far away from the coffee table

| | | Re: Number 1 Fungi Book We've got a wee pocket book with a size ruler scale in it - which is pretty handy in the field (Pocket nature), but for more comprehensive reference when we get home, we've got "The encyclopedia of fungi of Britain and Europe" by Michael Jordan**, which we think is SUPERB.

| | | Re: Number 1 Fungi Book Thanks guys,
Have just looked on the net and found I can view "The encyclopedia of fungi of Britain and Europe" page by page in one location, where the book is being sold.
And there in a site Rogers Mushrooms | Mushroom Pictures & Mushroom Reference where I can get a good look at what I think are the contents of the other book too.
Have to say the few images in Rogers I have seen look like they would be more difficult to match against a photo than the ones in encyclopedia.
I need to spend a bit more time and take a good look at both.

| | | Re: Number 1 Fungi Book Hi again,
Also looks like 'Mushrooms and other fungi of Great Britain & Europe" is out of print and has been superseded by a another book, simple called "Mushrooms"
I assume this is now the one to get.

Dave | Yes, it is the revised version of the same work, with corrections, updates and more species.
I will add another vote for that book. Not perfect, but the best popular guide IMO. To go beyond it you really need specialist text books, and a big wallet to fund them.
I will add a raspberry though as I do not like Jordan's book. I suppose it is an impressive achievement, but it does not work for me. I have seen them in the bargain book shops though. |

Dave | Only after buying 'The Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe' by Michael Jordon first Dave. The second 'newer' version of Phillips is not as good ... but still worth buying for around £11 on the river
