I fond these in a sussex hedgerow on a boxing day walk.
i thought the cap was quite odd in that the edge was quite straight.

| | | Re: unidentified brown fungi I`ve spent quite a lot of time recently, studying these. they`re called LBJ s and are filed under unidentifiable. Fungus Ken`ll know though.

| | | Re: unidentified brown fungi it was quite big - I'd say the cap had a diameter of about 60mm - and the height was about 90mm.
I thought that the cap shape would make it distinctive enough to identify.

| | | Re: unidentified brown fungi Seeing as no expert has yet had a go at this lets start the ball rolling and at least get people pointing out what it can't be .
Signs of a ring around the stipe. Cap with adpressed scales. Brown gills free or possibly sinuate. Assuming the spores are brown and not white (not guaranteed but more likely) we end up with Agaricus, Hebeloma, Pholiota, Hypholoma or Stropharia
Pholiota mainly on wood. Hebeloma cap usually smooth or slimy. Not right for Hypholoma(hows that for scientific ) Wrong overall shape for Stropharia. Which leaves Agaricus as the most likely
It does look a little like silvaticus but the broken part of the cap shows no reddening
So there's my starter for ten.

| | | Re: unidentified brown fungi In this instance I cannot waffle about the photograph not showing the features, cos it does.
I agree with Mal's reasoning, not that I have a clue what it is. I was going to throw in Lepiota on the grounds of the distinctive ring shape, but the brown gills rule that out.
So it's a Big Brown Job. |

| | | Re: unidentified brown fungi Mal's narrowing down to Agaricus, to me, makes sense. The cap is of that almost 'square' or 'cube' shape, which would usually suggest to me, Agaricus. Though which, I have no clue

| | | Re: unidentified brown fungi I'm no expert, but I've picked and eaten a lot of agaricus silvaticus and I'm fairly sure this is something else. The red staining is normally very obvious when cut.
