| | | Unidentified cup fungus with dark red centre Took these pics while out with my dog this afternoon. Salcey Forest, Beds. Scattered group growing on top and side of large oak log. Largest head ~25mm in diameter.
Help with identification appreciated as always.

| | | Re: Unidentified cup fungus with dark red centre I'd say it was Bulgaria inquinans. Next time you see some, try rubbing a finger or thumb on the top surface. If it leaves a brown smudge on your skin it is this species, which has brown spores.
Brown species of Exidia can look superficially similar but they have colourless spores and so do not leave the brown smudge on your finger.

| | | Re: Unidentified cup fungus with dark red centre Excellent! I found some of this a while back on a huge, dead Oak. I was very curious as to what it was but I didn't have my camera! Excellent, cheers for the thread Bruce, and to Ken...You're good at this mate

| | | Re: Unidentified cup fungus with dark red centre I went back to Stockgrove this morning and took a few more pics of selected heads from this colony.
While I was there I took the oportunity to try Ken's Bulgaria inquinans test by rubbing a finger on one of the heads (one of the more mature, flatter and darker heads) and it did indeed leave a brown smear on my finger.
