No idea what these are.

About 3mm tall, growing on the sapwood of a split dead Beech tree.

Maybe Phleogena faginea?

Here's what the Basidiomycota Checklist says about it:

"Habitat: Saprotrophic, and possibly weakly parasitic. On dead woody substrata and living trunks of deciduous trees (rarely on conifer wood).

Notes: Not uncommon in southern England. Basidiomes resemble large fruitbodies of the myxomycete genus Physarum. When dried they develop a strong smell of fenugreek or curry powder which lasts for years in herbarium material."

Beech is a favoured habitat.

I googled the name, found some pictures & it looks a very good match.

I will go back & see if they smell of curry when I get the chance.

I think you may have to collect some and dry it out before you get the curry smell.
