This morning weather much improved and out onto the common, these were on cow dung, most likely Psilocybe coprophila, a nice troop were growing and somehow i managed an awful photo. (wanders of muttering, must do better).

Tonight i find a mystery fungi on the old cow dung.
40X
Any ideas, it's a bit out of foucus but the stem is fluffy, so it looks to be a cap and stem species!, not to many have a yellow cap.
Have put the bunny currants out, they just seem overpowered by mould, and frankly ain't nice.

| | | Re: Herbivore dung - Have a dung day! thanks for that, i think next winter could see a mark2 super duper dung diary with lots of participants, with cross posting to the insect people for larvae ID, oh and i have found it with moss and/or algae, this is microenvironment anyone can take home.
The fungi in my last post was removed with a section of dung to put under the scope for the photo, tonight it dosen't appear to have grown any amount maybe due to disturbance but fear not i believe i have spied another looking about the same this evening.

Masses of these growing on dung trampled down in the heather, easy to think in passing Cheilymenia sp. but with the magnifying glass i could see no hairs on the outside of fruit bodies. ?

A gentle squash of the above fungi seems to support the idea it is Byssonectria fusispora, the spores are hyaline, smooth and contain several droplets, the parapyses also seem to contain several granules.

Hopefully Peziza, bovina or fimeti on old cow dung, will collect tommorow for microscope. (after photographers have been)

Cheers J.P. | Cavalry's on its way!
Garry and I will see you at 10.00am, though not too sure about re-acquainting myself with the substrate that laid me low at Greenham last autumn.

| | | Re: Herbivore dung - Have a dung day! LOL you had me going for a second. That's a weird photo. The Gorse looks like trees thus suggesting you'd found the rather rare Giant Cow - Bovinus giganticus!

| | | Re: Herbivore dung - Have a dung day! The dung experiment has been rather inactive for the past week, but tonight the what was fresh cow dung produced another cloud of flies, (amazing there have been none for days) and it looks to be speckled with emerging coprinus.sp. it never produced much in the way of zygomycetes and ascomycetes (maybe due to fly larvae), but tommorow may produce an interesting photo, if i get time.

This morning no flies, and a crop of fungi, these are up to 2.5 mm diameter cap, and the stems are up to 20 mm high, notice that even in the little time between removing box lid and taking photo, they start to bend over, i assume this is in response to air pressure change or the box atmosphere is moister so they start to dry out.
considering these were just protuding unopened caps last night that is an expansion of the stem lengthwise of 2 mm per hour overnight, quite impresive, i seem to remember fungijohn mentioned something about time lapse movies, this would be interesting event to film.
Will try for microscope detail later if i get time.

Not to clear in the photo, but there are over 50 cups of a Peziza. sp on this one cow pat, plenty of others in the area adorned similarly.

At the weekend just couldn't resist collecting a couple of pony buns, wow see photo, already look like they have been covered in candy floss, note little black specks (sporangia). Probably Rhizopus.sp.
