Good man, i knew i could rely on your lense doing a good job, there are plenty left there under an oak tree (in the shade). when you get to the X on the map i sent just turn right and they are along that slope.

Yesterday spotted this coprinus.sp on pony buns, there were a couple of others so returned this morning hopeing to photograph them open, as feared they had been savaged by slugs overnight

The one i had taken home and placed in moist chamber it didn't erupt overnight but has started to expand this morning.



Note: gess i didn't set it quite upright and has curved to correct itself, quite clever aren't they.

This seems to have stalled at 50mm high

The best i can get of Lasiosphaeria ovina asci so far, i gess the bendy base of asci will straighten
as they ripen and proturde from the fruit body, maybe if i just leave them in moist chamber they
will eject spores (when ready) and i can scrape some of the inside of lid.

A great day for failure



It just gave up, or is this a new species.



This seemed to be Coprinus cinereus except the spores were to small. Not directly on dung
more in a dirty hoof print.

I know JP is away on OU summa skool but we can't let this thread wallow in the mire even if that's exactly where it would like to be So I thought I'd welcome him back with what I found at Castle Bottom NNR this morning: The biggest Panaeolus ever! (Some measured over 6cm with an 18cm stipe - plenty of nutrient in that dung )

Well thank's for that matey, i should have been able to see those from nottingham had i taken some binoculars.



Did happen across this uncommonly tall Coprinus niveus today (fully reflexed) on cow dung, just shows despite there being plenty of cattle in the field, some don't get trampled.

Most of us I would imagine, have at some time come across a Coprinus sp. that has shed it's spores and is in the 'difficult' (for me anyway) curled up stage - some invert their caps like plicatilis e.t.c. and others end up looking like a rolled up black rubber 'Johnny' which thanks to Gary's (fungi2bwith) smashing photo in the recent thread '4 Steps 2 Blushing', I can now relate to Coprinus comatus.

Or so I thought (Grrrrrrr....!!) Now JP sticks up this photo of a tall fungi with a familiar 'rolled up condom' look but is calling it an exceptionally tall C. niveus

Ooh, you'd better be right JP.....well actually I'm hoping you're wrong, but you're probably right, which is why I'm mad (well I've always been mad).

I have been using the online (dutch) key to coprinus and these fitted well, it also contains a photo that isn't to dissimilar from mine, you can see a younger one in the background of mine for comparison.

You can find the site by typing in coprinus niveus, i believe i'm not supposed to add external links though if necessary i could grab a screen shot and post as a photo if need be.

As ever i'm happy to be wrong and learn from it.

First photographed this the 15th last month (on cow dung), it still looks much
the same and i have no idea what it is or will become, it seems to have spread onto a piece of betula as well (which the dung fell on), ignore the
yellow specks (they are betula seeds).

spores of above, i notice a couple have dark circles in them and some have a line along their
long direction, wonder if these are artifacts created by the stain causing flow of material out of
the spores (notice there is so much i don't know for sure) and hence some shrinkage!
(stain, cotton blue).

Brave man, JP, tackling a Conocybe. They all look the same to me macroscopically. But your microscopy makes all the difference and your photos down the microscope are excellent for showing the all-important characters.

Thank's very much for your comments FK, i'm afraid the microscopy hasn't
gone so well this evening (ho hum).

Anyway we did find Chelymenia fimicola today and these Coprinus.sp



Somehow they look a bit different to those i've posted before, they are now
in moist chamber and seem to be expanding nicely (will try for update photo
shortly under false light!).
