help identifying fungi

hey, can anyone help me identify this bracket fungi. it was found in deciduous woods last saturday.

It's a Ganoderma species, probably applanatum or australe.

thanks for the quick response. I did consider it to be a ganoderma, but thought the smoothness ruled out the applanatum. I guess there's always going to be some natural variation!

It's this characteristic which gives this fungus its particular use as an art medium and hence its common name of Artist's Bracket.
