I think the photos probably all show the plasmodium stage of Mucilago crustacea, before it has differentiated into the various parts of the spore-producing structures.

For my part, I have come across this species a couple of times this year and if lucky enough to find again will make every effort to return the next day(s) to photograph any changes.

Looking closely at your photo I think it could well be a different species of slime mould as the individual "bodies" have more of a jellybean shape and I'm guessing are somewhat larger than those in my image.
However one of the fascinating things about Myxos are their amazing ability to move and change shape.
Bruce | Thankyou Bruce - you're a wizz - I couldn't make it appear! Actually for size it was tiny and was taken using the scanner (way back in the days before I had a decent macro capability). The old scanner a Mustek - now long defunct - would reproduce excellent images which could then be cropped and blown up for even more detail. I only found out how much detail there was in this myxe after it had been on the scanner! So we're going back to around 1999 and I haven't come across since until I saw you're pics - which had me rushing into my archives!
In fact from looking again just now at yours I can tell they are about the same size from memory cos of the mosses and stuff in your pics

| | | Re: Brilliant white, tapioca slime mould - in need of ID pls. Nick - I'll keep an eye out for your Myxo posts in the future. Question: Is there a best time of year for finding slime moulds or are they an all year round life form? Your PS has been noted . Pauline - You're most welcome. I applaud your obvious enthusiasm/love for nature - immediately imagined you hunting frantically through your archives ....and btw I'm most impressed by just how much detail your old Mustek scanner revealed!

That Mustek really was a capable beast - it out performed digi cameras at the time - the Epson (for tranny copying) I got after with an update was very good for trannys but was useless for 'live scanning'! It was a virtually unknown way of getting pics at the time (and I took the idea from friend who had been experimenting with the scanner and large club (fungi!) and expanded on it. I ended up writing an article for The Field Mycologist in how best to go about it back in Jan 2002........ and I haven't been famous since
Pauline
And PS - we're still no nearer knowing what the mystery myxe is - tho knowing Ken I'll put money on it that his suggestion willl be bob-on!
