Alice Holt Foray

There is a foray this Sunday, November 11 organised and led by Julie Campbell of 'Shrooms (ABFG) at Alice Holt Woodland Park, near Farnham, Surrey. Meeting at the Education Services Classroom Car Park at 10.00 am. Nick Cantle and I are planning to attend this event and would be pleased to see any other WAB members.

I second that it would be fantastic to see more WAB members there. Hopefully, the forest will have some beauties left for us!

Wink Re: Alice Holt Foray

Unfortunately was not able to attend Alice holt as was running another foray myself. We found.
Safron milk caps
wood blewits
Cloudy agarics
Many brittle gills
pestle puff balls
wood mushrooms
Amythyst deceivers
slippery jacks
larch boletus
Snowy Waxcap
butter wax cap
Honey Fungus

That was just the edible ones. Also picked sea beet, sea lettuce, sea purslane, lava bread, Alexanders & horse radish, oh and snacked on a few limpets and chestnuts along the way.

Re: Alice Holt Foray

A successful and enjoyable event, especially as WAB member Mike Young (aka Mikeakabigman) joined Nick Cantle and I amongst the forayers. Included in some 40 or so species found and recorded were the following:

Mycena sanguinolenta (Bleeding Bonnet)
Cantharellus tubaeformis (Trumpet Chanterelle)
Helvella lacunosa (Elfin Saddle)
Xylaria polymorpha (Dead Man's Fingers)
Xylaria Hypoxylon (Candle Snuff Fungus)
Pseudoclitocybe cyathiformis (Goblet)
Laccaria amethystina (Amethyst Deceiver)
Hypholoma laterritium (Brick Tuft)
Lactarius turpis (Ugly Milk Cap)
Phallus impudicus (Common Stinkhorn)
Amanita excelsa var. spissa (Grey Spotted Amanita)
Amanita rubescens (The Blusher)
Amanita citrina (False Death Cap)
Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric)
Lepista nuda (Wood Blewit)
Gymnopilus penetrans (Common Rustgill)
Coprinus plicatilis (Pleated Ink Cap)
Cortinarius sanguineus (Blood-red Webcap)
Clitocybe geoptra (Trooping Funnel)
Russula sardonia (Primrose Brittlecap)
Russula nobilis (Beechwood Sickener)
Hygrocybe virginea (Snowy Waxcap)
Armillaria mellea (Honey Fungus)
Hydnum repandum (Wood Hedgehog)
Lycoperdon perlatum (Common Puffball)

Pleasingly the result was far better than anticipated.

Re: Alice Holt Foray

Was truly a cracking day. As you mentioned, it was a fantastic surprise to see Mr. Young there with us! So much more success than was initially anticipated! A couple of firsts for me...Plus when I got to correct JP on the Tubaeformis WHAT?! I've got to be smug SOMEHOW!

Cracking day and surprising how much more I saw without my camera 'attached' to me!!!

Nick

P.s - A couple of pints of Pride topped the day off eh lads?

Re: Alice Holt Foray

I was truly fortunate, in that my plans for Sunday with my family were changed, thus enabling me to turn up unannounced for the foray.
As usual I got there miles too early and was beginning to think the event had been cancelled, when almost at the crack of ten oclock everyone arrived and off we went
This foray was a real eye opener for me, with valuable and freely given info on the massive subject of Fungi coming at me left right and centre.
I learnt an awful lot, but came away with the certain knowledge that I had a vast amount more to learn.
Many thanks to everyone on the day for a splendid session, not the least my friends David, who I met for the first time that day and Nick.
I was in particular, hugely impressed by Julie Campbells knowledge of the subject, so special thanks to her.

A very agreeable finish to the day was had in the local hostelry, marred very slightly by the thought that I may have lost my wallet I was of course ribbed by my companions that it was a ruse to avoid paying for a round
However on returning home I found it safe and sound in the washing basket, my round next time lads, which I hope wont be too long away

Re: Alice Holt Foray

Great to hear the elusive wallet turned up safe and sound Mike; not so much in anticipation of your next round in the pub but more in view of the fact it has saved you the hassle of canceling and replacing various credit and ID cards etc. After so long in contact on various web sites it was a pleasure to meet face to face at last, and I know both Nick and I look forward to further opportunities to benefit from observing the expertise of your meticulous lensmanship in all the fields of natural history to which you dedicate so much time and patience.

Cheers

David

It might not be the musings

but i'll take it on the chin

I was thinking more of...

" The beauty of mushrooms shows in Mycena Rosea

but excluded from that rule lies Agrocybe rivulosa..."
