| | | Where does a novice start? I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I'm very much one who enjoys living off the land, not to mention eating mushrooms/fungi. However, I'm also very aware of how dangerous this potentially is. I've only ever picked (and eaten) field mushrooms and parasol mushrooms, but wish I knew more about this subject so I could enjoy other varieties and be sure that what I was eating was perfectly safe.
Where's a good place to start? What are the DOs and DO NOTs? Sorry if this all seems very naiive (I'm sure there are many experts here), but we all have to start somewhere, and I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Should I enrol on a local 'field trip' with an expert?
Thanks... |

A very warm welcome to WAB! In this forum you'll encounter newbies and experts...Personally, I've only been hunting for a few years but I've alot left in me as I'm not quite 20 You'll pick up so much knowledge here by looking at the Gallery, scanning posts and generally taking an interest in what people have to say, As for the specific subject of fungi, the best bet is to go for a walk or a foray with a leader, preferably some kind of fungal expert If you're lucky, you'll catch the last forays of the season. It's heading toward the last part of the season but I'm still coming home with a basket of yummies every Saturday Hope you find your footing here and if you need to know anything, just shout Be sure to have a good old look around the Gallery too. We have many a good photographer and the combination between photography and the diverse world of fungi is one that words cannot describe...God, bit pretentious aren't I?
See you round

| | | Re: Where does a novice start? Hi altyfc
welcome to the forum
I am also new to fungi and I would be very wary of eating anything unless as you suggest you go along with an expert.
Some of the differences between edible and poisonus seem very slight to me
As I said I am a beginner and there are plenty of knowledgable people who can give you some more beneficial advice

Sorry to sound stupid... but how do you go about finding an expert, and what should you look for in order to ascertain whether they truly are one? |
