Help with idetifying a couple of shrooms

Hi - Found (among others) these today.

The first one looks like a beefstake fungus to me, except that it was the wrong shape. It exudes a red liquid, found at the base of an oak - very subtle smell (slightly antiseptic?) and firm red flesh with white marbling. Globular in appearance and about 10cm across.




This one looks like a Wood Blewit to me...
Amongst the leaf litter, beneath oak and hazel. Mild mushroom smell. White spores.

Your second photo looks like L.nuda, but Blewits have pink spores. Happy foraging

don't worry! I just wanted to use a white background for the fungus. I haven't eaten it.

Based on the above post I'd say it is definitely a young Beef Steak Fungus. I can't find anything remotely similar.

fistulina hepatica it most certainly is. Often found on ancient oak trees. Although causing heart rot can also increase value ot timber as stain the wood red.
Very good to eat if seared in a very hot pan to look like steak, the creamy fat looking layer will crisp up nicely. simply season and consume. check out recipes in my new book out next year, The edible mushroom book, fifty mushroom recipe of fifty varieties. £14 out August 2008
