| | | Re: Fungi ID help Please I think the first (two) are Jew's Ear, and the next two are some sort of ink caps, possibly Coprinus micacous. (But I'm no expert on these things, so hopefully someone who is will come along and confirm, or not!!)
I think the woodlice is just trying to hide! |

| | | Re: Fungi ID help Please I go with lauriek's suggestions. The last is a Mycena, perhaps M. inclinata. The stems start out grey, then darkens with age. There are other possibilities including M. arcangeliana and M. galericulata. |

| | | Re: Fungi ID help Please Hi thanks for the possible ids
are jews ear and Jelly Ear the same thing or are they different?
I have Roger phillips book mushrooms and i can find no mention of jews ear
he refers to Auricularia auricula-judae as Jelly Ear so I guess they must be the same

John | Judae is the key word. (Jewish).
The name Judas' ear fungus is commonly called Jew's ear.
This is because it is often (very often) found on Elder, and legend had it that Judas hanged himself on an Elder.
Morning!
Doug.
ps. I assume Jews ear is ofen called Jelly Ear in order to be politically correct and not to be seen as anti-semitic in any way by the pc brigade? But I might well be wrong here. An expert will be along soon I'm sure...

If our hunch is correct, then yep - it is ridiculous.
Its one of the aspects of "wildlife" I find fascinating - how things got their names - and a lot of names boil down to legends etc...
A shame to lose all that because of political correctness...

Nick | Yep, stupidity. In America the term Wood Ear is sometimes used.
I happen to think the complete changing of the popular names which took place a few years back was utterly stupid. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
