| | | unknown fungus, again maybe blewit? Another one, found in woodland but near the edge, forming a large 'circle' but broken up a bit, not obviously a circle at first but then I realised they did form a definite pattern. Thought these might be field blewits to start with but the location seems to suggest not. some of them were pretty big, caps around 8 inches diameter...
Any tips appreciated! (There were a load of these last year, going on to quite late in the year - so if they are edibles I'd be interested to know!!) |

you're probably right! I was so unsure of the ids on all of these I don't think I wanted to group them all together and make myself look /really/ silly when none of them were blewits!!
Thanks again! |

| | | Re: unknown fungus, again maybe blewit? Those are Field Blewits, which usually occur in fields, and can fruit into the Winter. I have seen them at the edges of woods too, though quite why they normally occur in fields is beyond me.
Can I ask where abouts in the country you are as you seem to be finding some good specimens? |

| | | Re: unknown fungus, again maybe blewit? Cheers. You are not far from the South Downs which are good for wax caps, including many rare species. Assuming you do not already know that!!!! |

The roads round here are awful, but there's some nice countryside around the town, including about twelve acres of parkland/woods around my house which I have permission to use. (we're in a cottage in the grounds of an old stately home). This contains an amazing (to me) variety of fungi, which is nice! |

| | | Re: unknown fungus, again maybe blewit? Hi Lauriek
My range of "edibles" is small, but this one certainly looks like the field blewitt (blue leg, blue stalk etc) to me. My grandad knew of several patches but wouldn't share the whereabouts until he was no longer able to go himself. He was gutted when a housing estate was built on one of his favourite fields . He eventually "let me in", which reminds me that I've not been this year??
They have a really wonderful flavour, best fried with some old style bacon and a duck egg or two. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
