Spotted your revisions Ken, but now I can't delete the superfluous entries. Never mind.

Re: Improving our Fungi Resource Centre

The Admin team have now supplied a facility for a supplementary image as well as an enlarged Main Image. It require some fine tuning with regard to the cropping off of the RHS of the images, but it's shaping up nicely:

Thanks mainly to the ongoing sterling efforts of Richard (CloudedYellow) this figure has now topped the 500 mark.

Re: Improving our Fungi Resource Centre

Recently there have been a few minor niggles and criticisms of the A to Z which for those spending a good many tedious and laborious hours updating can be irritating.

Preferably, as anyone on site has every right to create an entry or make any alteration they deem justifiable to an existing entry, it would be better for them to correct the error through the editing process rather than carping on. Moreover an Additional Note and/or an Edit Log at the time of any change would help advise the latest state of play for each entry.

Failing that use the 'Notice Board' to advise the Volunteers of the changes required:
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fo...ice-board.html

Thanks for your co-operation

David

Re: Improving our Fungi Resource Centre

David said in a different threed "where possible, all Main Images have been re-instated and consequently the Index thumbnails are restored."

Whilst we wait for some more uploads from FJ this weekend I was wondering if anyone been through all the gallery images to see if there are other sp. there that have not made it to the A-Z? CS maybe?

Re: Improving our Fungi Resource Centre

For instance I have just noticed Schizophyllum commune uploaded by FJ over the past few days. I have added that to the A-Z, hope that's ok John.

Re: Improving our Fungi Resource Centre

With nearly 3500 images in the Gallery it's a daunting task: I did at first try and keep step with a print out of FJ's Gallery Fungi List

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/gallery_fungi_list

but in this daily changing scenario that has now been superseded by the A to Z itself, with respect to numbers of species.

Now when browsing if I am lucky to see a potential image either in the forums or the Gallery, especially if it bears the endorsement of our resident experts, I check it out with the A to Z and where appropriate use it either to create a new entry or as an addition/replacement for an existing entry: Far from ideal I know, but the best I can manage at the moment.

A few more Volunteer editors, and even 'spotters' or image contributors using the A to Z Notice Board

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fo...ice-board.html ,

would increase the chances of avoiding species slipping through the net.

OK David, I will start and going back through the gallery and see how productive it is. From what you say it may not be worth the effort though.

Re: Improving our Fungi Resource Centre

The weekend had been quite hectic one way or another but I have managed to resize over one hundred images and place them in member order. I need to do the latter so they can be uploaded more easily

We do have a bulk upload utility but I didn't want to risk any adverse effect!

So, hopefully this week images should start to appear in the main gallery. I'm initially only going to upload new species or those that are significantly better than our existing ones.

I think you already mentioned that these will appear amongst Recent Photos in the Gallery - and hence amongst the latest images in the Fungi Pictures. We will keep a lookout for them John so that all Nick's verifications, and your hard work in retrieving and resizing, enhances the A to Z list.

Cheers

David

Thanks Mal. If the A - Z links worked properly via the Scientific names instead of these stupid common names this may well have been resolved in double quick time with your prompt. Still a good example of rapid response by the Wabbers though.

Hi David

Are you asking that the common names are removed from the A to Z?

It's a reasonable request given the overall confusion and recent threads.

It's a difficult one John - Stu has explained in great detail why it's been set up the way it has to satisfy the needs to engender more search engine hits based on common names, because it's perceived that the majority would rather use those. But when it comes down to the needs of those participating in the fungi forums I sense the situation is reversed. I have no objection to the common names being included amongst the information for each entry but I would much rather that the links back to the A to Z from the forum were directed to the scientific name instead.

Moreover the effect in both the ID chart and the common name listing is to split up the species of any particular genus which doesn't make sense to me either. I think we have to settle on a compromise because there is still apparently a requirement to search by common name.

David

John
Unlike some I wouldn't like the "common names" removed but I would prefer the Scientific names list to be the default.

Re: Spongy Bracket

Thanks David and Mal.

Very valid comments. Whilst I appreciate the external search criteria it does nothing to aid the forum and A to Z.

Considering the amount of time that you in particular have spent on this feature it seems reasonable and sensible to move the 'compromise' goal posts ...IMO

I'll see what can be done.
