| | | Brown Birch Bolete confirmation please. Having searched through the Fungi gallery, I'm gonna have a stab in the dusk and opt for Brown Birch Bolete - Leccinum Scabrum, for this.

Fungi are definitely an alien species, as far as I'm concerned. I even hesitate to take pics of them because of the difficulty of ID'ing them just from photos.
To be fair, this must be one of the easiest fungi to ID from a pic.

However, I will try to bite the bullet, and at the expense of making a right wally of me 'sen, endeavour to engage in fun filled fungi forays.

All my worldly wealth was used to give an indication of the size of this monster.

| | | Re: Brown Birch Bolete confirmation please. LOL Stewy, how many times do I have to tell you? You know lots!!! Looks like you've got yourself a monster Cep there Tormentil
Looks like a biggun! Take note of where it was growing. Keep checking the area .
I wish to correct a typo I made in an earlier post of this thread. I claimed that the puffy cap of Leccinum Scabrum was a welcome site Of course I meant 'sight'...But come on, it was late

| | | Re: Brown Birch Bolete confirmation please. One way to separate Leccinum scabrum and its relatives from Boletus edulis in the field is to look at the stem. Boletus edulis has a raised white network on the stem (as you can just see in the lower photo) whereas Leccinum scabrum has dark squamules.
Interestingly, if you find a Leccinum that looks like L. scabrum but it has a woolly grey covering on the stem (a bit like the one in the top photo but its hard to be sure), it might actually be L. cyaneobasileucum.
Here's a link to a recent key but it relies on some microscopic characters. Google Image Result for http://www.entoloma.nl/html/images/brunneogriseolum_1483.jpg
A synoptic key which uses mainly macroscopic characters was recently published in the magazine, Field Mycology, but it's not available on line.
