| | | Re: My first fungi foray If you're primarily there to photograph then I would suggest either waterproof trousers or something to kneel on. You might also find a pair of tweezers and/or a small brush useful.
If you're going to be picking specimens you might want a knife of some sort... |

| | | Re: My first fungi foray Hi CB,
I went on my first mushroom foray on Sunday the 7th, I did not know what to expect so of course I took my small back pack with everything apart from the kitchen sink. It was fantastic the leader was a lady (Joyce), she said due to lack of rain we would not see much but I was hardly able to keep up with what we found, you will thoroughly enjoy yourself, I did, then at the very end she led us to Dead Man's Fingers and Collared Earthstars. Even the fungi folk were surprised. I know I have rabbited on but you get the drift, note book, camera and super hearing. At some points I wished I'd had an hearing aid.
Fortunately I managed to speak to Joyce on the car park and we exchanged emails so I have spoken to her and confirmed certain details.
Have a good time
Carol.

| | | Re: My first fungi foray One thing I've always found useful, is to think like a mushroom...and No! I have not been eating the wrong type! I find it really usefull... looking down on various 'shrooms, it's easy to miss lots, or mistake them for leaves. If you're walking in a woodland that isn't flat, look up the inclines, not down. And face away from the sun (if it's out!) Take as many oppurtunities to look around when you're crouched/sat down as you can. And if you find one, stay at the height you found it, and scan the surrounds.
It may be a slightly odd 2p, but it's my 2p ...
Even if you don't find anything (which is highly unlikely) enjoy your time outdoors. 'tis truly a great season to be out. |

If you haven't already done so, read FungiJohn's guide to photographing fungi. It is VERY helpful. Fungi Photography Guide

I normally take a small compact mirror with me so I can look at the underneath of mushrooms without disturbing them
Have a lovely time, I'm sure you will!!

What sparked your interest in mushroom hunting Cherrybee?

Just watch and listen to the Mycologist / leader when people take fungi to them. You will learn far more
Just remember ... Note where you found it .. what it was growing on .. what was growing nearby and if you take a sample make sure you extract the whole fruit body ... Oh, and try not to handle it too much
Most of all enjoy your foray ... it will probably be the first of many

Admittedly loving photography as much as fungi I was glad to record images of some of the finds, several of which were new to me, but I feel while concentrating on the camera I missed out on some of the wealth of experience and knowledge of the leader and recorder. Depending on your priorities it's a difficult one to balance. Tomorrow, for instance, I am joining NickCantle and Mikeakagbigman at Alice Holt Forest in Surrey and as we are all dedicated photographers the cameras will be out in force searching for that cracker to put in the gallery, but next time I join 'Shrooms I'm sure the camera will take a less prominent part in the activities, though just like you I would feel naked without it.
I'm sure you'll love every minute of your foray anyway.
Cheers
