| | | Identify Big Mushroom
It's almost 12 inches across the top, with a dark-yellowish underside.
I though it was a type of Boletus, but it's massive.
Thanks ... Naz x |

I'd never seen anything that big except in a bracket fungus before.
Now, where can I buy a massive frying pan? (only kidding)

In further backup to my ID, if you look in the gallery at FungiJohn's images, amongst the many beautiful images of fungi, there is a photo of him with a monster Cep! It looks like yours. Well, I think it's a Cep in his photo...or, If you had have found it a while ago, you could have been eating well |

| | | Re: Identify Big Mushroom Well, not many other Boletes grow to such sizes do they? Badius certainly doesn't in my experience...
Final call = Edulis |

| | | Re: Identify Big Mushroom Managed to get a few more shots of this behemoth ... might help to give us a definitive identification.
I notice it's been gnawed at, would that have been rodents, or a bird?
It wasn't growing when I found it ... It was upside-down on the grass bank at the side of the road. I 'posed' it for the first picture. p.s. Loving this forum, it will satisfy my Wildlife thirst, I'm sure |

| | | Re: Identify Big Mushroom Got to be a Cep...Which is a good sign for you. Was it sitting on the edge of a forest upturned? You might want to venture into that forest |

| | | Re: Identify Big Mushroom Yes, it was upturned on the grassy bank at the edge of a (very) small wooded area ... there was a smaller one with it too. I assume they originated there, but have no proof as yet.
I only noticed it because it was upturned, if it had been 'right way up', it would've blended in with the background too well, and I would probably have missed it.
I'll have a nose about tomorrow when I go past there, see if there's any smaller ones.
All round to mine for a banquet, I reckon |

| | | Re: Identify Big Mushroom Just a thought ... I have a medium-sized tree in the garden, which is quite shaded underneath.
If I put this under the tree, what's the likelihood of some spores producing me a nice crop later on? |

| | | Re: Identify Big Mushroom Personally i'd say that the chance would be so very small that it really wasn't worth thinking about it. You'll have to wait longer for a more accurate answer.
