Looks like you stumbled across a nice patch of Coprinus Comatus - The shaggy ink cap. Lucky you!

Thank you for the ID , they looked pretty unusual to me, but then I've not been looking out for them untill just recently and I'm sure there are plenty more unusual ones out there to be seen

They make very good eating when young. The only non-agaric, wild mushrooms I've been brave enough to eat so far! |

As they age, they deliquesce, that is turn to liquid. The black liquid they produce was once used as a cheap substitute for Indian ink |
