| | | Shaggy inkcaps and alcohol Whats the overall thinking on eating these when alcohol may be present in the body (Coprinus comatus). I know common inkcaps can cause major problems when taken with alcohol.
Been a biologist i understand the metabolic pathways inhibited by common inkcap active ingreedients and since i suffered from heart palpitations for 3 months a couple of years ago (which were never properly diagnosed) the last think want is to end up screwing myself over again...
The majority of reports ive read state Coprinus comatus do not pose a problem with alcohol but a few reports claim most Coprinus sp. should not be eaten if alcohol may be present in the system. |

| | | Re: Shaggy inkcaps and alcohol Hi Gupps
I ate shaggy inkcaps probably a couple of years ago now in a soup with no ill effects. I'm ashamed to say that I drink alcohol every evening so I would have been drinking back then too. |

| | | Re: Shaggy inkcaps and alcohol Well, i've heard and read that they are safe to eat, even with alcohol in the blood...but there is still a massive level of doubt. I don't think it's worth the risk to be honest, unless we can be 100% sure. I'm sure someone will know the state of play...
They can't be called Coprinus Comatus for no reason... |

| | | Re: Shaggy inkcaps and alcohol The Common Ink Cap - Coprinus atramentarous is not strictly poisonous. It will however make you feel very ill if you eat it within 12-24 hours of consuming alcohol. The fungus contains Coprine, a chemical that reacts with alcohol (ethanol) to produce a poison which disrupts the body's neurological functions. It can be very unpleasant!
Coprinus comatus should only be used when it is young and fresh. This is when care is needed to ensure you have the right species. It is often used in soups and makes a fine mushroom ketchup. |

| | Re: Shaggy inkcaps and alcohol I have eaten C. comatus both before and after consuming beer, with no apparent ill effects. They must, of course be picked before the gills start to discolour, and cooked asap. Happy foraging, Chazzpott. (Soon to be Fungi2). |
