| | | 2nd year at this hope it goes better than last year... I have a couple of questions if anyone can help please.
Last year was my 1st year of trying seriously to identify any fungi.
My main intention was to find myself a nice meal. I set myself the task last year of finding a penny bun to munch upon but after searching all season all i managed to find was what i dubiously identified as some bay boletes, which i aprehensivly fried up and ate, not enjoying then at all as i managed to convince myself that I was probably poisoning myself as i ate them. Well im still here so guess they were edible at least. To my 1st question do i stand any real chance of doing myself any serious injury by miss identifying a penny bun and confusing it with another boletus species? I know a few are classed as poisonous but from much searching they seem very different to penny buns in appearance. Are there any species of fungi that have the pores on the underside like boleteus that are poisonous?
To my second question, I know you guys and gals guard locations of fungii as I would too but can anyone point my in the right direction of where i could hunt for some penny buns around the west yorkshire area (Halifax to be specific). Not many woods to choose from around here just moorland full of kids picking magic mushrooms this time of year ( Im guessing penny buns are normally found in mixed woodland.
thanks in advance |

Can't help with you neck of the woods so to speak (I'm down South) but I find most of my Ceps in mixed woodland and especially favouring Oak. |

The only lookalike which might cause a (small) problem is Tylopilus felleus, which has more open, pinkish pores, and tastes very bitter. There is no danger of overdosing on it, therefore.
Have a look around the BMS records to hunt out suitable sites - there's one here, for instance: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.sr...3300&ay=415500
Here's the BMS record page to have a look through: http://194.203.77.76/fieldmycology/G...?intGBNum=1805
Good luck! |

| | | Re: 2nd year at this hope it goes better than last year... Hey Gupps,
I've certainly mixed the two up in the past. By the way, Bay Boletes are excellent edibles, as are Edulis as you'll know. Infact I went Bolete hunting today, but I saw absolutely nothing. Needless to say I was extremely disappointed. It's too dry! But back on topic, i've definitely mixed the two up before.
