| | | Woodchip fungi ID This troop of fungi were growing on a pile of leaf litter and wood chips and very nearly fits the Phillips description of Agaricus altipes, except the stem was thinner (5-7mm) with a pronounced skirt-like delicate white ring and the gills were definitely dark brown. Spore print chocolate brown. |

EDIT. Yes they are, ignore me!
Looks like Stropharia semiglobata to me. The Dung Roundhead. Alternatively, I could be wrong. I only forgot my Phillips didn't I |

I only forgot my Phillips didn't I | Good steer thanks Nick, though smaller (Cap 1-3cm), not quite such a distinct ring ("ring incomplete, often represented by zone of blackish fibrils") and spore print "dark purplish-brown" - I on my way out the door for a second look.
Cheers

| | | Re: Identification help please Agrocybe rivulosa was added to the British list in 2004 and has since been found growing all over the country on piles of woodchips. I've seen it at several sites around the Manchester area. It was first described by Marijke Naute in 2003 from a site in the Netherlands, growing on a pile of woodchips.
It can give the appearance of an Agaricus at a first look. The large but thin ring on the stem and wrinkling of the cap as the mushrooms mature are very characteristic. Agrocybe rivulosa would be my bet.

| | | Re: Identification help please A search of the Fungi Forums reveals that, unbeknown to me, this issue was resolved earlier this year on a thread posted by GerryNick2 http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fo...lp-needed.html The subject of woodchip fungi is a fascinating topic.
