The fungus that you photographed is not the one you want. Fomes fomentarius as pictured by fenger is the image of the stuff I eventually found and used. I am not a fungi expert but love fly fishing,.I found and made some usable stuff after using the instructions from this link and reading some victorian fly fishing books, Hope this helps..link,,,,, New Page 1.... Oh yes and try to find some that is not to old,,,, I found that old really hard ones can be really hard to process..
