| | | Boletus ID please Clumber Park (26) 26 August 2007
Found growing under Beech and Yew trees.
Cap dia 58mm, stem 50mm at widest & 25mm at narrowest point
Smell strong, pleasantly sweet. Flesh white with pores pale straw / yellowish. Does not discolour when cut, other than to dry out a dirty yellow.
Your observations and opinions welcomed
Les

Mark | I agree that the stipe looks right but would have expected pinkish tubes/pores if Tylophilus fellus Bitter Bolete, so think that id is unlikely. I actually saw four of them yesterday (and tasted one!) All had a pinkinsh flush to the pores and the one I cut had the pink (coral) tubes as well.
I have never seen Boletus Edulis so I would not like to comment on Les' image.

Mark | Yeah, the stem does look a bit different to a Cep. |

| | | Re: Boletus ID please Boletus edulis always has a white raised network on the stem, so this is not a cep, while Tylopilus felleus does have a distinctive dark brown network on the stem, very like that shown in the photo. Tylopilus felleus will have pink tubes when mature. The pink colour comes from the ripening spores, which are pink themselves. So the tubes and pores start out white and turn pink, gradually deepening in colour.
The easy way to tell in the field is, as has been suggested, to nibble a bit of the flesh, which would be bitter for Tylopilus felleus. To be sure you could take a spore print.
I think this is Tylopilus felleus.
