Toad Stool Names

I don't know if any of you Fun Guy's & Gals have ever browsed my vernacular thread on the Wildflower section? I don't know a lot about Epiphytes but i'm always curious about Mothers natures Creatures what ever they may be! Would any of you be willing to post in the weird and wonderful names given to our Mushies & Toadies? All the best- Jez

I've always thought the name Plums & Custard for Tricholomopsis rutilans is novel and sounds great, except because it's poisonous!

Ah...( shows how much i know i do have a couple of books on Mushrooms) so there are affectionate names then i thought as much! Cheers grumpy your a star p.s had mushrooms for tea my favourite there somewhat dreamy!!!

I've always harboured a soft spot for Porcelain Fungus (Oudemensiella mucida) as one of the more aptly descriptive names applied to this beautiful species:

Yes i'm captured. Trying to think of a name that i could give to justify it's beauty! It looks so pure and haunting at the same time but more than that!! Puriest Parasol, does that do it justice?

Many years ago I was with a group of students in a native pine forest area and I wanted to see/photograph the Morel-like fungus Gyromitra esculenta (which, as the name suggests, is edible, except when it is deadly poisonous, maybe after frosts).

Knowing students and in an effort to stimulate their interest, I described it as looking like "a brain on a stick".

The description worked, they duly found it, and I related this tale on a couple of forays.

Next thing is a friend of mine hears it being referred to as "Brain-on-a-stick" on a radio programme and the name has got back to me a couple of times since.

At least it is not one of the American names that seem to be pervading our British fungal culture now.

If a google UK search is done for 'common names for fungi' have a look at the 2nd link for the recommended common names. I think they've gone way over the top with the amount of species though.

A vast improvement on the other recognized alternatives: Slimy Beech Cap and Poached Egg Fungus.
