| | | Sulphur fungus ID I came across this in the woods today. Can anyone ID it please? I only have an ancient Oxford Book of Flowerless Plants (yes I know fungi are not plants now). Closest I can get from that book is Grifola sulphurea. Is that correct or has there been a name change because I cannot see it in the WAB gallery? Thanks

| | | Re: Sulphur fungus ID Thanks for that. Yes - it is the same one, but my book doesn't have a Laetiporus listed. Must be one of those tiresome name changes.

On a BMS-linked page, for instance, there is this map which provides a few pointers for North Norfolk. |

I made him "Another" loaf of bread for some unknown reason last night! |

| | | Re: Sulphur fungus ID Found my first C.O.T.W yesterday - about 8:45 pm last night, just before it got dark. Went back this morning at 7:30am to photograph it and someone had cut it off!!
BTW, it was on willow - any views on its edibility (there were others pushing their way through the same tree)? I recognise that there have been lots of posts on this one regards yew, eucalyptus etc. but what about willow? |

| | | Re: Sulphur fungus ID Well Jus, that's a pain in the backside. I was really glad I found it and cut it off though
As for the edibility as associated with substrate, don't quote me, but I think you're okay with Salix, Quercus and Prunus but I think that edibility is affected by Taxus

| | | Re: Sulphur fungus ID Saw a lovely one two evenings ago on a willow..... Left it in situ so suspect someone else will have had a "chicken dinner" by now.
Hadn't even given a thought to the variation in edibility depending on substrate though!! |

Getting back to near the beginning of this thread, there are very few records on the BMS database of nearly all the common species, in Suffolk you would think the Fly Agaric to be rare, looking at the database.
People (myself included, ) just don't seem to bother.

| | | Re: Sulphur fungus ID Do you have to be part of an ABFG or BMS group to be able to register your finds? I remember Richard Shotbolt recording most for Norfolk along with a couple who used to traipse my most sacred hunting grounds I know the records for Norfolk and Suffolk are patchy, but I think we'll have to sort that out this season Neil In all seriousness, when I go out and identify specimens, can I then send a list to a registered body where that information will be put to use?

Well I ate some of the bit that was left on the tree and I'm still alive, although these fungus things work in mysterious ways |
