On your request about submitting records I have been doing that as an individual when foraying alone and as a member of both ABFG and BMS affiliated groups

So do you think it's wise for me to join ABFG or BMS when I get home then? I don't mean which of the two, but just one body that I can submit species lists to etc? Although I've said I will foray with either the Norfolk or Suffolk Fungus group, there will always be times where I depart on my own |

I'm home now, the Suffolk group are affiliated to the ABFG, and hopefully soon, the Suffolk Naturalists Society, whilst the Norfolk group are BMS and also ,I think, affiliated to the Norfolk Naturalist Society.
I tried years ago to start a BMS group, but no Suffolk members seemed interested unlike Norfolk who have some very enthusiastic members.
I only joined ABFG as well because I thought I may be missing out on something. About a month after joining M Jordon wrote to say he now has enough folks in Suffolk to try and get a group formed.
Out of a list of 20 ABFG members (not all from Suffolk) only 5 of us turned up at the inaugural meeting, and unfortunately, the most experienced has his own forays to do and was unable to attend any of our 6 forays last year, so I tend to lead the forays and do the identifying, while fellow member John, does our web site and subsequently became our recorder.
Unless someone has told you otherwise while I've been writing this, I think anyone can send in records to the BMS.

But each record must be confirmed by someone the BMS knows to be competent.
I don't think the ABFG are so stringent, but they should be.

Neil. | I certainly didn't get all my finds verified and I know I wasn't competent and looking at some of my suggestions it might be argued that I am still not too hot
I do think that when you are inexperienced if there is a choice between new to the UK, new to your county, even unusual or something common you are likely to opt for the common You need the specialist books to even list most of the unusual species within a genera and newcomers don't usually have these .
That's what I think is great about this forum. It allows newcomers to try to identify themselves but gives the backup to spot some rarities and as long as these are confirmed by either the BMS through Kew or ABFG then that is fine.
