| | | Unidentified mushroom Apologies to Fungi John who's trying to clean up the Gallery but I've just added another unidentified one...
I think it's probably Mycena sp. but not sure. Saw it at Minsmere on the path between Bittern and Islan Mere hides. Is that another one just coming up in the bottom right corner?

| | | Re: Unidentified mushroom Thanks Adam - much appreciated. I see in the Gallery that it has two different common names; Pleated Inkcap or Little Japanese Umbrella. Think I like the second one best, it's a bit more lyrical.

Um, well, I'm afraid I don't think so. Certainly a Coprinus and, subject to examination of the cap surface with a good lens, probably a member of the group that contains C. plicatilis. But this is a good example of a group where use of a microscope is essential if any kind of a record is going to be kept or reported.
Based on macroscopic appearance, colour and habitat, I think a very good bet is Coprinus kuehneri, but without microscopic examination that has to remain just a guess. (In times past we would have called it ' C. leiocephalus', but that is now known to be a distinctly paler species, with somewhat larger spores and slightly different cystidia.) C. kuehneri is a frequent but under-recorded species of shady paths, woodland edges and the like.

| | | Re: Unidentified mushroom Thanks Alan,
I've just googled Coprinus kuehneri and found Kees Uljé Coprinus site. The picture there certainly looks like mine and the description and habitat quoted all agree too. I guess we can never be certain from a photo though... Quote:
