| | | UFO (that's 'F for Fungal') Another wierd one off my dead apple tree. I thought it was last years 'slime ball' returned but it's got a much tougher surface, with substance like chocolate brownies inside (the photos are quite large so I thought it better to give text links . UFO
It this one's about 90mm long but the one about it was round.
The same fungi turns into THIS after a few days (big photo so you can see the texture).
I am not sure if this IS a fungus or the casing of a burrowing insect - the outside looks like the silky exterior of a chrysalis and the 'brownie'-like texture of the inside made me wonder if something had chewed up the wood.

henrya | Thank you it was the inside that stumped me because the other one I posted on here last year burst and it looked like custard running down a dead tree. I hope that one comes back because I can photograph that and use it in a piece of art .

Your Slime Mould is Enteridium lycoperdon. If you cut it with a knife (its very soft) when fresh the inside resembles custard ... but don't taste it

John | Don't worry John, I have one simple rule in life - if you can't pronounce it, you got no business putting it in your mouth!
