Hello everyone. This is my first request for info, since I joined WAB .I was picking up acorns today and noticed that some were not as heavy as others. Each lighter one had ONE tiny hole in it's 'shell' , a similar size hole to a woodworm hole. Obviously they were lighter in weight because some , if not all the seed had been eaten. What is doing this , is it an 'insect' or something , eating it itself , or is it something laying eggs in each acorn , so that the larvae have food when they hatch. Thanks(in anticipation)

this time of year is obviously great for seeing flushes of colour from the berries on trees. i enjoy getting photos of them, as they often contrast well with the colours of the autumn leaves and with the dull weather which usually accompanies them.

got a couple here which i need to get ID'd though, so if anyone could help that'd be great!

first one i think is Whitebeam Sorbus aria

this one stumped me the leaves, of which i didnt get a photo, looked like field maple, but i didn't think they had berries. is there any way anyone could ID it from these pics?

Advice about planting a woodland in Somerset

For my Dad's 60th B'day he is planting a smallish woodland (1-2 acres)in Sommerset. He has been advised/ had a plan drawn up by somebody who is proposing to plant mainly Sycamores, I am rather sceptical of this being the right choice, as i believe these to be the trees which ooze lots of sap and have been advised that Sycamores are like weeds which self plant and can be a pain, also that they create a very dark floor to the woodland.

I know my Dad is keen on Beech trees, though i know nothing of their pros and cons. I do know he would ideally like to have some bluebells established. I know he will plant just a few oaks (for the future which will be slower growing)

I particularly love trees which have low branching, possibly known as 'forked trees' and would love to include a few of these, does anyone know how this is possible?

Most of the trees are being transplanted, but obviously things to be considered are; how easy a tree is to establish and speed of growth. We hope that the woodland can be enjoyed for many years by my Dad and is something that will mature and flourish for the future.

I would be very grateful for advice on which trees to select.

We bought and moved into a new house earlier this year. In the garden is a beautiful laburnum tree which had a magnificent canopy of flowers in June or July. At the same time the pods appeared and grew and turned a darker colour but none of them fell which completely ruined the beauty of the tree. The leaves are now all fallen but the pods are hanging there still. Is this normal? It would be almost impossible to pick the pods off by hand because of the location of the tree but it is not at all attractive as it is!
Can someone advise me please?!

Hi All

We moved into our house 2 years ago and inherited a tree that I thought was some sort of willow...just ornamental

However, this year it has fruited...please see pics. They look like tiny pears to me. But I have researched a bit and I can't find any pear trees with the narrow silvery 6cm twisty leaves that it has...has anybody got any ideas? 'Crab' pear? Ornamental pear? They don't seem to be getting any bigger (about 4cm) and it's mid Oct.

Any help appreciated! Please note the shape of the tree may not be a guide as I have toddlers and it has been randomly pruned and pulled about them.

Thanks
Claire
