Hi there,
I went to put some stuff in my loft after working away from home for a month. I live on the Wirral, Merseyside.

When I got up, there was spider webs all in the eves of the roof and loads of dead house spiders everywhere.

I then saw a strange spider

It was about the size of a 1p, smooth, shiny, black with red dots on its back. Its back bit is much bigger than its front bit.

I took some photos which i will try and attach but there not that good, will try to get some better ones, a friend just told me about a macro setting on my camera.

I have only seen three of these spiders one the size of a penny and the others about the size of a 5p.Also it looks like there are egg sacks.

Does anyone have any idea what these are? are they harmless? Should i call pest control or just let them be?

Thanks for your help

Rarely seen outside of the tube, he's ventured out today in the dim light and I've stuggled to get into a position to photo him without him shooting back into the tube.

This image is highly cropped and poor but there appear to be some long bristles on the hind pair of legs and using my FSC guide am thinking that it could be Amaurobius similus but I'm not convinced.
I would welcome suggestions as to a conclusive ID if possible. Thanks.

I then noticed that there was a small ball of web that it seemed to cling to which I assume is an egg sack. Spiderlings appeared about a week ago. I am confused as I thought that spiders only hatch in the spring and that they all die in the winter? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi everyone, I'm b0dge...

I took this photo last year and then, after showing a few people, forgot about it. Until now.

I was having a cigarette outside my back door last night (don't smoke kids, it's not big or clever) and for some reason was looking at the wall, and saw three of the familiar looking holes in the brickwork had black legs poking out of them again. This jogged my memory of this photo, and so I spent a bit of time this morning trying to ID the spider, and as far as I can see, it's a Tube Web Spider (Segestria florentina). It lived (unfortunately, about ten seconds after this picture was taken, my girlfriend hit both creatures with a shoe) in one of the aforementioned holes in a south-facing red brick wall in my house, not far from Ninesprings Country Park in Yeovil, Somerset.

Anyway, I just thought it was an interesting photo, and other people might be interested to see it... :)
My wife and I recently returned from a trip to Burgundy where I removed a piece of dead bark from a maple tree and these spiders was under the bark.
I would love to know it's identity please.
I suspect the dark one is wolf type.

I think I've got giant cave spiders living in a badger's tunnel under my tool shed and in my log pile. A section of concrete caved in on the path by the shed a couple of weeks ago, and inside the tunnel I could see a large white egg sac hanging by a thread from the roof. It was pure white, about the size of a maltesar, like a cotton wool ball.
When I was gathering logs from the log pile by the shed this morning, I picked up a log with a similar egg sac hanging from it. You could see the eggs inside it so it looks like a viable egg sac, not an old one, and very pure white.
I now have the dilemma of how to keep warm without destroying their habitat. I suppose if they're in the badger tunnels too, then I need not worry about moving the logs? I'll make a sub-pile of any logs with egg sacs, and cover it with tarpaulin. What do you think?

They were dark in colour, just ordinary house spiders I think but quite large, perhaps 2-3 inches long.

We were all completely puzzled as to what they were doing. Just yesterday I remembered the inncident and searched it on google to see if I could find an answer but after 30min have had no such luck.

Could anyone here shed any light on the topic as we still completely baffled! :)
