This one was done on coloured paper with coloured pencils. So Martin, a challenge :) How about an enchanted tree with your computer art skills? or anyone else maybe.............

Just a simple scan of some leaves can make quite an effective picture, we can all do this and play a little, and get a result fairly quickly, from the leaves to "my scream" well I just liked the colours and saw the face and a few other things, but the face was the focal point for me.
Playing and planning, for an idea which has now started to develop. This was started as a rough to see if the faces worked from the tree but I just got carried away on the experimental side and excited by what you can do on a computer, by having to use your hands and dexterity to develop an image to what your mind sees, or at least try to see if you can get the images to life.
Still playing with elements but think I am going to have to resort to ink and pen then mix with elements to get the effect that I am looking for, not far from it.....but just missing a personal touch a controlled mixing and little touches you can not do with a machine  .

Following on from Andestines thread on Natural symbols, I decided to go back to basics a little bit on the watercolour theme.
I thought I would arm myself with a couple of books and try using some basic techniques..I even bought myself a new brush :p

After spending a little time in Waterstones, I armed myself with the Collins "Need to Know" book of watercolour. At £9.99 it isn't cheap but it seemed to be filled with some very good tips and exercises. I also think it will be a useful resouce for a long time to come.
I started with some simple type things. If you have read the other thread, you will know I wanted to have some tips for trees. In fact this little book is full of them so firstly I tried some winter images and then some autumnal.

Then because I can never work steadily through a book without wanting to have a go at something else, I just had to have a little paint of a shell, :D

Meanwhile, I also added to my resources by buying a small book from the works. 30 minute watercolours by Fiona Peart. At £2.99, it is very reasonable and I like the idea of 30 minute exercises. Sometimes, I struggle for time and lose my enthusiasm, finding time for art can be quite difficult when you work or have other commitments.... Anyway, I will report back on that one too :)

I thought it might be nice to start a thread to provide some ongoing space just for constructive criticism of wildlife art. No matter if you’re a beginner or a professional artist there are times when you know something is wrong, but can’t put your finger on it (even after all the old tricks with mirrors and putting it away for a while etc ;) ).

Someone with a good eye is needed then, and anyone can join in because you don’t have to be an artist to work out what’s wrong (my ex was the best critic I ever knew, and he was a musician who couldn’t draw at all :D).

So if you have any old works that never seemed to work gathering dust, or if you’re stuck with something at an early stage, why not post it here and let the collective spot what's wrong :)

I know it’s scary but I’m willing to start. I can’t really paint, but I love watercolours, and this one almost worked. It’s one of my favourite places. The day was warm and mist turned to gentle rain (Pauline, don't you dare mention the light - you know how much I dislike the sun :D).

I got the drawing down onto Arches 140 lb watercolour paper on the spot, added colour notes and took a few pictures for reference, to finish back at home, though I didn’t need to use them much.

I think I got the feel of the day, but I was never happy with it (ex had it framed which made things worse ). There’s something very wrong with the rivulets going down to the sea, and the headland on the left seems too dark.

Can anyone help me work out what went wrong? All comments and criticisms most welcome. I love to learn by my mistakes :)

Cheers,
