I drove home with a big, satisified grin on my face.

I managed to get a few pictures too which I thought I'd share.
The Bittern was really stealthy and I would have missed it if someone in the hide hadn't pointed it out for me!

I'd be interested to hear members opinion on posting spider or insect "predator with prey" images - such as this one for example:

I come across these life and death dramas most days during "the insect season" and have occasionally posted forum threads containing images of these encounters. It could be just coincidence of course but I've noticed that these postings rarely receive any comment and I wondered if maybe some members might find them upsetting. I do know that many people won't watch wildlife documentaries if there is a chance of seeing animals being killed.

I'm NOT of course talking about bird or mammal predator and prey images as I imagine most of us would find them quite upsetting.

Hi - I take a lot of pictures of birds and am always disappointed at the lack of sharpness in my pictures. I've read a few of the threads about sharpening pictures using Photoshop but am sure there must be techniques or something I'm missing to get better quality pictures to start with. I've uploaded a photo I took this weekend where I was lucky enough to see my first ever Bearded Tit, conditions were excellent - sunny, quite calm and at a distance of about 15 feet away, it even hung around for about 3 minutes! Equipment used is Nikon D80 with Sigma 120-400 lens and a monopod. Settings were F5.6 and 1/1000, ISOAuto selected a setting of 900 (could this be the problem?). I've cropped the picture. I'm a novice at photography so all advice will be much appreciated (I know the composition isn't great but am trying to crack the sharpness issue first :)).

Hi

I have decided that landscape is one of the subjects I want to concentrate on after about a year of doing all sorts.

This is a couple of shots taken on a glorious sunset evening at Nash Point on the South Wales coast.

Went to Carsington today despite the forcast for rain. I listened to the wife instead:rolleyes: she said it seemed a nice morning and it would be a nice day. Arrived at Carsington and sure enough the skys opened:mad:
So we went to a hide I decided to read the Camera instructions and set
preferences in the menus to what I would find useful. I also tried putting the 2 converters on and practiced on some Lapwings feeding on a sand bank. The light was poor and the shutter speed was around 1/40 sec. But I was suprised with the results. Though if the lapwings moved the shot blurred. The camera was held freehand though I was leaning on the window cill. All photos have gone through neat image and perhaps lost a bit of crispness, but it helped reduce the noise. I will learn to do the background only someday:confused:. I will try this setup up again on a day with good light I think I will get some passable shots. The king fisher also made an appearence
cast a pellet, and shot off. Again any movement and the shot blurred. Auto focus worked, but slow. In the information it only noted the 2 X TC and quotes 600mm. So I am not sure what the total overall mag was.
Regards
Colin

My wife has been trying out her new toy a ringflash, trying to photograph moths.
This one I think is a Silver Y but as you can see it has light reflecting in it's eyes - something that has not happened with other moths taken from a similar angle.

Does it suggest a trick of the camera or a more complex eye in this moth.

However how can she overcome this problem please and please keep any advice very simple as we are elderly and unfamiliar with technical terms. with computers or careras?.

Thank you,

He mentioned we may see Kingfishers and otters. Within fifteen mins we were sat six feet from an otter casually working its way down the reed beds!
We must have seen at least fifteen to twenty different sightings of Kingfishers. One, within four feet! Unforntunately the light was grim on the saturday so I pumped the iso to 1600. Usuable but you do lose detail. Handholding a non vr 500mm on a boat is fun too!

Got some shots that came out okay though. On the Sunday we went seal watching. Whilst concentrating on bird photography I didn't notice the two large seals creeping up the tide to investigate what I was up to. Gill had been watching this and fianlly let me know when they got within 10ft!

BIG thumbs up for the broads. Gonna be back in the Winter.
