| | | Re: Move to put our clocks forward an hour in winter ive never really understood the logic that farmers in the northern areas 'need' to go to GMT - why can't they just alter their hours of work ? , especially as cows etc can't tell the time.
personally i think there'd be an argument for GMT+1 in the winter and +2 in the summer

The whole thread , starting with the OP relates to a Political ( i.e. Westminster ) Debate, surely?
Personally I do not think that this debate is PARTY (Lab V Con V Lib etc) politics, any more than any, for example ,debate on here about how the Government is progressing with the problem of bovine TB & the possible culling of Badgers . That issue is a MAFF issue. And one that's being debated in Westminster, across all parties.
I compare these few Very Northerly farmers to a tiny Tail wagging a Very Large Dog, and I personally don't believe that is a fair thing to do, that such a small minority can inconvenience such a large majority.
I do believe that such an inconvenience is being shrugged off by those in Power in Scotland.
Quote above "Scotland was still a part of Britain" .

| | | Re: Move to put our clocks forward an hour in winter Nobody has addressed my point - why do we need to change the clocks at all? If we need the extra hour of light in the morning/evening, why can't we do it all year? |

| | | Re: Move to put our clocks forward an hour in winter I suggest that it's simply to take advantage of the more numerous hours of daylight that are most apparent to us all - in May, June & July. And if we didn't "spring-forward" in April, we wouldn't take that advantage.
For the two other quarters of the year - each one either side of the May-July period, it's probably neither here nor there in respect of it working positively or negatively.
But it works negatively in respect of November, December January , and so that's why it's "fall-back" in October, to minimise that negative effect, which is more pronounced the further North in the U.K. we are. |

| | | Re: Move to put our clocks forward an hour in winter The number of hours of daylight remain the same whether you have it lighter in the morning or afternoon. Personally I'd hate it, up here it would be dark until about 10 mid winter which would be SAD. No thanks. But what I think doesn't count - this proposal is not about allotments or road safety or farmers or keeping kids active - it's about aligning business working hours with Europe. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
