| | Conservation question? Hello,
Does anyone have any information regarding 'when conservation first started in Britain'?
A year would be great if there is one and also some proof to back it up, a website, book, etc. I ask as I need to state this is an essay im writing for uni and I can't seem to find any good information that’s clear. I need to prove where it came from so I can reference it.
Would be great if someone could help, thank you.

Take care

I'll try and remember ... later. For sure the RSPB was the first nature conservation organisation although that was inspired by the RSPCA. RSPCA not obviously a conservation body in modern sense but it did something about cruelty to wild animals and thus, in a way, helped to conserve them.
Other people, not in particularly organised ways, did a lot to conserve habitats simply by buying woods and other land, thus foreshadowing wildlife trusts. The National Trust, haphazardly, conserved wildlife by taking over many landed estates, particularly moors although, until recently, they were more concerned about conserving buildings than nature!
Good luck. Quote:

Kris | you're right it was "grebe fur" at the begining (1889) they were the SPG , but were given the royal seal of approval around 5 years later History - The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
The national trust was set up four years before (1895) although to begin with they were more about heritage National Trust | History of the Trust
The first national parks were 1949 as a resuly of the national parks and access to the countryside act.

| | | Re: Conservation question? Thanks Paul and eeyore, I will try and add this info. The essay is not really about its history but I just wanted to add that to give me a base to work from.
Cheers
