| | | Is there such a thing as Environmentally friendly boilers? I know that this may seem a bit random, and it took me a while to decide which category I should ask this in, but are they environmentally friendly brands of boilers? (and are the brands socially responsible?) |

Wood pellet boilers, and they are very controllable and convenient, like gas/oil boilers in that respect, but with the occasional need to empty ash and fill the hopper ... only trouble is, they are very expensive, and wood pellet supply in Britain is not reliable. I looked into it and had to rule them out. |

(and are the brands socially responsible?) | Hi Enviro, no boiler is friendly, the best we can do is just damage limitation. Condensing boilers are the best at the moment, the condensing bit adds some small advantage but the heat exchangers on condensing boilers are so good that you can see a steam plume outside on a cold day. This may sound like a bad thing but other boiler exhaust gases are so hot (plasma) that they are to hot to make steam. The saving on fuel costs ia also very welcome.
I am in the process of building a solar pre-heater to my home, this consists of ten evacuated tubes from ground level to the eves on my south facing wall, they work on light so even work in the winter. They exchange their heat into a anti-freeze filled pipe that inturn, as heat rises (convection) exchanges its heat into a normal insulated copper cylinder in the loft, the cooled antifreeze then sinks down again and is re-heated in a cycle. The loft cylinder is fed from the mains cold water tank, the pre-heated water feeds the normal cylinder with warm rather than cold water when hot water is drawn from a tap. There are no pumps or controls on the system, you just fit it and forget it. It does need an anti-freeze fill point plus a small expansion tank for safety.
I hope this answer is what you was looking for, sorry if not,
Kind regards,
David

| | | Re: Is there such a thing as Environmentally friendly boilers? A good environmentally friendly boiler is ok but also remember to make sure your house is well insulated and your doors and windows don't let in draughts. Good insulation can cut your gas or oil usage and help the environment.
Just another idea,
