| | | Silence and Human Speed I'm sorry if I haven't posted this in the right section but i wasn't sure quite where to post it and this seemed the most appropriate!
It's very, very quiet and peaceful where we are and especially when we're out gardening in some of the more remote places. No noise whatsoever apart from birdsong..no distant cars, no planes and no hum of machinery..be it mearly the hum of a fridge or computer. It's the kind of silence which is quite still, the kind of silence you can listen to and be at peace with. It also stills the mind and makes you do things at a more gentle pace - a proper human pace.
We seem to suffer from so many health issues now - both physical and emotional - and I'm sure these stem from lack of true silence and peace combined with the fact that we are moving at a constantly faster pace to keep up with the machines that seem to subconsciously rule our lives.
The Industrial Revolution has a lot to answer for and while I know this is purely an ideal situation it would be lovely if we could gradually revert back to pre I.R. times. Not only would it help us with health issues but it would also be beneficial to the environment and all its ecosystems. |

| | | Re: Silence and Human Speed We were on the coast near Damage Barton there were lambs recently born,
Skylarks up in a deep blue sky and total silence, balm for the soul.

| | | Re: Silence and Human Speed Lovely.
Theres a lot to be said for peace and quiet and ruminating with a blank mind.
We used to live in a tiny hamlet up on the moors, no noise - not too bad now even so, in a little village - but give me wild moors any day, then when they turn calm and quiet on a hot summers day, its just the best with skylarks and curlew bubbling and a little peaty stream tinkling away.
Its coming. . . .
Bliss.

It was not the idylic existence that some costume drama likes to portay , and for many the existence was as Thomas Hobbes said " Nasty, brutish, and short" and therefore not the least bit "lovely"

Depends on the quality of life though - no siting in traffic jams or on crowded tubes etc. Hard work maybe but with a better quality of life and no noise from machines and no ill effects from the pollution they cause. Working long hours to pay for food and bills etc - well nothing has changed there ...or has it..we now have the effects of pollution. Conventional medicine maybe free on the NHS but herbalists and other types of alternative remedies don't and some very old cultures have been using these ways for centuries and have lived long and healthy lives. Central heating etc - well I only had that when I first moved to Eastbourne in 1996 and I managed perfectly well before with open fires and woodburners. I still prefer to use them if possible!
Tell me would you have mentioned period dramas if I had been male?!? |

| | | Re: Silence and Human Speed What is life if full of care I have no time to stand and stare ......
People are so wrapped up in themselves and their self made problems that they have disconnected themselves from what makes them whole
Pretty profound eh?

| | | Re: Silence and Human Speed A lot of older people talk about the "good old days" but could you imagine life without your car, washing machine/dryer, modern cooker, hoover etc. etc. Yes, life would be more peaceful but you wouldn't have the time to enjoy it.
