Thought I'd share this with you from the February issue of Fortean times. Danish biotechnology firm Aresa has developed a genetically engineered tobacco plant that can detect landmines. Business Today reports that it is currently being tested in Serbia. The leaves turn from green to red when they detect nitrogen dioxide leaching from mines buried in the soil. Tobacco was chosen as the ideal crop for the project because it grows easily in most soils. Landmine clearance is usually done with sniffer dogs (or rats in the case of Mozambique), or large mine-clearing machines advancing inch by inch. If successful, the modified tobacco plants could speed up the process considerably. Gold Coast (Queensland) Weekend Bulletin, 26 July 08
