| | | Tuna Just thought I'd let you tuna eaters know. (I've got nothing against you)
In my Greenpeace mag today I read that John West and Princes brands, which together make up 60% of the market, are the worst at ensuring the fish they sell is caught using sustainable methods.
Here is a list of the best to the worst;
Asda, Tesco, CoOp, Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Princes then John West.
So now you can choose wisely. |

I presume that all tinned tuna come from the same sources so the answer there is simply don't buy tinned tuna. |

Waitrose have a good reputation for green issues on the whole and they do give local farmers a good go.
I have tried not to buy Albatross unfriendly/ Dolphin unfriendly tuna but it's not easy when some don't say what fishing methods are used.

Yes, but that's where we all have to do our thing (as if we hadn't got other things to do ) - we have to write to the companies and ask where their fish (veg, meat, coffee ... ) comes from while stating that we won't buy from unsustainable sources. Until they state clearly and openly that they're doing it properly then we just have to abstain.
Say what you like about Tesco (and I do!) they do tell you which fruit/veg has been flown to UK. I don't buy it but then I don't buy from other companies which don't say (although I guess that beans from Peru may have been in an airplane ). So Tesco, in this case, are doing something helpful.

Yes, I agree and I did but sadly Sainsburys didn't have the grace to write back and that was about a year ago. Emails seemed to fall on deaf ears too.
I will however have another go and see what happens.
I'll keep you updated.

Hi all
if you follow the link you will see Green peace state the following....."All of Sainsbury's tinned tuna is now pole and line caught, making their own label the only brand surveyed that is entirely fished using sustainable methods. This gives Sainsbury's own label a clear edge over all the competition in our Tinned Tuna League."
"By only buying pole and line and hand-lined tuna, Sainsburys is fishing as sustainably as possible, but there are still overall concerns about the status of yellow fin stocks in the Indian Ocean from where Sainsburys is sourcing fish."
Heres the link to The Tuna League Table 2008......... The tuna retailers league table 2008 | Greenpeace UK
regards
Gess

In the mag there was no real way of telling how things were in the league, I should have done a bit more research before typing anything. Still though, the named brands were at the bottom. |

| | | Re: Tuna This web site says that Americans eat 3lbs per head in a year. That comes to quite a lot of cans. The woman in the article eat a can a day and ended up with 10 times the safe limit of mercury in her blood.
This was albacore tuna, hence the expression "rotten to the albacore." Why Mercury Tuna Is Still Legal |

Perhaps shovelling mercury into USAmerican school children explains something about their intelligence.
Interestingly, since this thread started I've been unable to buy any raw tuna from Waitrose or Sainsburys where they normally stock line-caught fish. |
