Re: New mountain in Wales

That makes 190 now & none of them have I ever climbed! If I'm up that way again, I'll make that my first Welsh Moutain walk!

From Nevis down - they're all hills!

You must be a keen Mountain Walker Jim, what are your favs? Do you class Cumbria as hill climbing country also?

To me, being high up in the clouds I view as Mountain climbing!

I drive to the Cairngorms from Hertfordshire every year. By the time I hit the Lake District on the M6 I've got my foot firmly planted on the throttle! The reputation for crowds also puts me off the Lake District.

I've been up most of the Munros in the Cairngorms. I guess my favourites are Braeriach and Bynack Mor. Here's a view from about 200ft off the summit of Braeriach.

You may have a point in terms of height, but Ben Nevis has nothing on the 'big five' (An Teallach, Liathach, Beinn Eighe, Slioch and Beinn Alligin). In my humble opinion, these are the most beautiful and greatest mountains in the British Isles.
The mountains and moors of the Lake District and Pennines are also great hillwalking landscapes and where I served my apprenticeship. However, I am in total agreement with Jim in terms of the Lakeland crowds, but it would be a shame to miss out on the likes of Helvellyn, High Street and Blencathra, because they are just too good to omit.
For isolation, the Pennines serve me well, especially 'England's Last Wilderness', the North Pennines AONB. Cross Fell at a more than respectable 2930 feet is a beast, and whilst lacking the grandeur of say Great Gable, it beats it hands down in terms of wildness and splendid isolation.

Regards, Chris

I am not sure where that popped up from .

Not much chance of one appearing in low-lying Essex .... hence my annual fix in the Scottish Highlands .... and Wales.

Smile Re: New mountain in Wales

I wonder if they just put a 6'' high stone on top of the hill for publicity?
Seriously, Chris started my memory working for all those brilliant lonely mountains in Scotland - I too have spent many years hitting the M6, A9 etc to get up to some wildness on the west coast and Cairngorms. I loved to go to Ben Lawers too - the most amazing place for a mix of rare arctic and alpine flora because of its unique development history above glaciation combined with mica schist to support the rarities. Stunning to explore. A Munro too!

Being a Diggle chap Ken, I bet you served your apprenticeship on Saddleworth Moor. I certainly spent a lot of my teenage walks up there. I remember a pal and I walking from Milnrow to Greenfield, probably in 1987, in thick mist. I got stuck in a peat bog near the Isle o' Skye road at one point, and we got hopelessly lost on the plateau of Black Hill. Ah good ol' days.

Regards, Chris

Re: New mountain in Wales

Correct Chris,
you cant beat a bit of peaty, gloopy, wild heather moorland with curlew and golden plover for company, then a pint of good ale in a lonely old boozer with spit and sawdust on the floor - ah those were the days. Still are.
Ken
